In June 2021, the National Bank of Rwanda announced the commencement of a study that would look at the economic, financial and technology aspects related to CBDC as well as the operationalisation model, taking into account the local context.
The research was supposed to be concluded by end of December 2022, and the country was supposed to have a clear policy on whether it will issue the CBDC or not. There is no update available on the current status in the public domain.
