In June 2023, Banco de Moçambique announced creating a multi-departmental working group to collect experiences on digital currency issued by central banks. The bank conducted few studies in the past.

The first study investigated the implications of adopting a CBDC for the stability financial support in Mozambique. The study recommended that if the Bank of Mozambique decides to adopt a digital currency from central bank, it should be retail and non-remunerated.

The second study sought to investigate the impact of the digitalization of financial services, understood as digitization of means of payment, on monetary policy. This study highlighted the need for future research in order to explore, in depth and using empirical analyzes and model simulations economic factors, the real impacts of the CBDC on the transmission channels of monetary policy.
