Iceland

The Central Bank of Iceland published an interim report in 2018 on the work it performed on exploring the issuance of its digital currency electronic króna (rafkróna). The report covers several aspects of issuing a digital currency —

  • Reviewing current legislation
  • Acting as a contingency measure or full time availability
  • Impact on monetary policy
  • Impact on financial stability — the effect on bank deposits

The report is the Central Bank of Iceland’s first step towards stimulating discussions and exchange of ideas among stakeholders.

As per Financial stability report published in 2022, the Central Bank of Iceland said that it will continue to follow the global developments around digital currencies closely.
